Although what JK says is unmistakably so, I wonder how people unfamiliar with his teachings may interpret this extract. His, is a via negativa, meaning that you do not posit a hypothetical positive state to start with but may come upon such a state (unknown) after a thorough and sustained examination of the contents of consciousness leaving no trace of duality or inner conflict in oneself.
An extract is by definition fragmentary. When JK says ‘you are consciousness’ it should be related to how he defines consciousness in the first place: ‘consciousness is it’s own content’. You start with the actual not with a projection of what consciousness could be or should be ultimately. Out of its sense of security, the me is always too willing to identify and thus tame that whose nature is unknown and unknowable. There can be no process of recognition involved rather total innocency. This is how he reports of his encounters with that timeless dimension which he calls the otherness meaning something totally unknown to what we refer to as consciousness. A fragmentary comment from someone deep in ‘ordinary’ consciousness.
In this extract JK describes consciousness exactly as it is: its contents are shared by all humanity. The feeling of having an individual and separate consciousness does not stand the scrutiny. Yet it endures and is shared by a majority. and the consequences are even more visible and devastating today than in JK’s time. The ignorance of that one single fact is responsible for the chaos our present world lives in. This is surely the reason why his insistance was not on individual salvation but on each one’s responsibility as regard the future of mankind on this planet.
